Colombia’s 2018 World Cup in Russia didn’t start well, but despite losing their first Group H match vs Japan, Colombian fans are still hopeful that James Rodriguez and Radamel Falcao can achieve World Cup glory. Or at the very least, rely on the Colombian National Team to unite a country divided by politics and the peace process. Just two days after a contentious presidential election which saw President-Elect Ivan Duque defeat Gustavo Petro in a runoff, Colombians gathered in parks to watch Los Cafeteros kick off in Russia. For the 3rd episode of From Russia With Love, COPA90’s Pat Infurna was in Bogota to explore this latest chapter in Colombia’s long-running relationship between politics and football. One that dates back to the 90’s with drug cartel-owned football clubs, the murder of Andres Escobar after the 1994 World Cup in the USA, and Colombia’s victory at the 2001 Copa America, a.k.a ‘La Copa De La Paz’.

COPA90 US is North America’s voice in the global soccer conversation. We're here to share how football feels and passionately tell the stories no one else does, in our region and beyond. This is the soccer generation that we're building together.
