Volcanoes, scorpions, frostbite, gale-force winds and border games with North Korea – to say the DIY trip to China was full of surprises is quite of an understatement.

Changabaishan volcano, the 'Ever White Mountain', has an illustrious history and is also known as 'the Holy Mountain of the Revolution' in North Korea, where Kim-Jong Il was – so the story goes – born under a double rainbow. The South Koreans and Chinese also hold the volcano sacred and the border is disputed, with South Korea claiming the whole of Caldera/Heaven Lake as its own.

With cameras and local “guides” everywhere this is definitely not the place to mess about – which is exactly what Xavier and Sam planned to do.
